Busy Household? Be Intentional With the Time You Already Spend With Your Dog
Share
99% of people lead busy lives: work, kids, errands, dogs. Most of us don’t have the luxury of being full-time dog trainers with endless hours to dedicate to training. The good news? You can still have a well-mannered dog. Less time + more consistency = success. The key is being intentional with the time you’re already spending with your dog.
You don’t need to carve out extra training sessions. Just use the moments you already have and reinforce the behaviour you want.
Simple Ways to Build Training Into Your Daily Routine
Walks:
If you already walk your dog, use that time wisely. Practice a sit before leaving the house. Work on heel, recalls, and sits throughout the walk. When you come home, have your dog lie down while you take off your coat and shoes, put away your keys, and grab a towel to dry them off.
Car Rides:
If your dog rides with you, ask for a sit before jumping in and a wait before getting out. Teach them to hop in on command if they don’t already. With the right training tools, you can crate your dog in the car or teach a down/calmness for higher-drive dogs.
School Pickups:
While you wait, have your dog practice a sit or a down. Work on heeling in place and reinforce calmness until your child reaches you and then your dog gets to break and greet, without jumping up.
These small habits teach your dog how to behave and work their mind, leaving them calmer and more fulfilled. By the time you're back in the hustle and bustle of home life, you’ve already invested meaningful training time without adding anything extra to your schedule. Consistency turns these tiny moments into huge results for a well-mannered, happy dog.
Short, intentional, and with good follow-through and you’ll look like a pro, even if you don’t have the time of a pro!
